WHAT ARE COMMUNITY COUNCILS
Community Councils exist to act as a voice for the community, to represent its needs and views to the local authority, and other public bodies, and to provide a limited range of services at a local level.
Community and town councils are the part of local government closest to the people. They serve the smallest area and are responsible for the most local of matters. Very importantly, these councils can "precept" - raising a sum collected with the council tax each year to improve facilities and services for local people.
As well as representing the community to the local authority, Community Councils facilitate a wide range of activities which promote the well-being of their communities. They bring local people together to help make things happen, and many Community Councils protect and promote the identity of their community.
With regards to our present Community Council some members have never been elected in a public vote and were appointed through uncontested elections. In 2017 and 2022 there were no elections when any public votes were cast by the community.
What information should be made available to a Community by a Community Council when taking decisions and actions? There should be consultation about any policies or decisions taken (The Welsh Government claimed to have sent out, to all Community Councils, consultation regarding the imposed 20mph speed limits). The Community should be able to assess what the Community Council has done for the Community that they serve, Community Councils have some funding available for their communities. More importantly is you should be made aware of who your councillors are. The actions, conduct and meetings should be public, open and transparent.
Community Councillors are elected every five years. The next election will be held in May 2027.
