GUIDED WALKS WITH DR. DILYS JONES

(28/07/2023)

A series of easy and accessible guided walks on the theme of local rivers kicked off on 6 March with a walk round Pennant, focusing on the River Arth. About 15 people turned up and there was much of interest to engage them, including the fact that The Ship was the focus of the mass migration to Ohio in 1818

The next walk took place on 20 March in Aberarth, the estuary of the Arth. Again, about 15 people attended and were surprised how much there was to learn about the little hamlet. Welsh cakes were provided by Glenys for the end of walk tea. Glenys was born close to Aberarth and talked us through her early life there before marrying and moving to Pennant which all found fascinating.

The following walk focused on the two rivers, Cledan and Peris, which wind their way through Llanon and Llansantffraed, again well-known for their ship building industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. This walk concluded with tea in the White Swan.

River Aeron provided the focus for the next three walks, starting with a short tour of Llangeitho (on 24 April), the first village on the river, and the birth place of Daniel Rowlands (founder of the Calvinistic Methodist Church) and home of Annie Jane Hughes-Griffiths (prominent peace activist). The walk concluded with tea and cakes in Llangeitho cafe.

The River Aeron rises in Llyn Eiddwen and the next tour (8 May) was car based, following the lane round the lake and Mynydd Bach, taking in Trefenter and considering the history of enclosures and subsequent abandonment of farms with many emigrating to Ohio. Tour ended at Annmarie's house for tea and cakes.

The last Aeron River walk met in Cae Sgwar, Aberaeron, on 12 June. The harbour was established by Act of Parliament in 1807 and was the brain child of wealthy local land owner, Rev Alban Thomas Jones Gwynne. The harbour soon became a centre of ship building and trade and continued that way until mid-20th century when tourism began to take over. The walk concluded with tea at Ambassadors.

Our final walk for this season took place on 10 July in Llanrhystud. This short walk began at the Barn, Pencarreg, and took us round the River Wyre via the Church. Again, this was a ship building area in the 18th & 19th centuries with many local amenities. White Swan in Llanon hosted our final tea.

Thanks go to Ali who captured us all on camera for Pennant Facebook page!

Our next season will kick off in Rhos yr Hafod on the evening of Wednesday 14 Sept when the theme will be Sparkly Shoes... This needs to be confirmed so watch this space!

All the walkers have enjoyed and learnt much from these local historical walks. We are looking forward to the new season - there is no charge and everyone is welcome.

Teithiau cerdded tywysedig gyda Dr. Dilys Jones

 (28/07/2023)

Dechreuodd cyfres o deithiau tywys hawdd a hygyrch ar thema afonydd lleol ar 6 Mawrth gyda thaith gerdded o amgylch Pennant, yn canolbwyntio ar Afon Arth. Daeth tua 15 o bobl ac roedd llawer o bethau o ddiddordeb i ddal eu sylw, gan gynnwys y ffaith mai'r Llong oedd canolbwynt yr ymfudiad torfol i Ohio ym 1818

Cynhaliwyd y daith gerdded nesaf ar 20 Mawrth yn Aberarth, aber yr Arth. Unwaith eto, mynychodd tua 15 o bobl ac roeddent yn synnu faint oedd i'w ddysgu am y pentrefan bach. Darparwyd cacennau cri gan Glenys ar gyfer paned ar ddiwedd y daith gerdded. Ganed Glenys yn agos i Aberarth a bu'n siarad â ni drwy ei bywyd cynnar yno cyn priodi a symud i Bennant a oedd yn hynod ddiddorol i bawb.

Canolbwyntiodd y daith ganlynol ar y ddwy afon, Cledan a Pheris, sy'n dirwyn eu ffordd trwy Lanon a Llansantffraed, sydd eto'n adnabyddus am eu diwydiant adeiladu llongau yn y 18fed a'r 19eg ganrif. Daeth y daith gerdded hon i ben gyda the yn The White Swan.

Afon Aeron oedd canolbwynt y tair taith gerdded nesaf, gan ddechrau gyda thaith fer o amgylch Llangeitho (ar 24 Ebrill), y pentref cyntaf ar yr afon, a man geni Daniel Rowlands (sylfaenydd Eglwys y Methodistiaid Calfinaidd) a chartref Annie Jane Hughes-Griffiths (ymgyrchydd heddwch blaenllaw). Daeth y daith i ben gyda the a chacennau yng nghaffi Llangeitho.

Mae Afon Aeron yn codi yn Llyn Eiddwen ac roedd y daith nesaf (8 Mai) mewn ceir, gan ddilyn y lôn o amgylch y llyn a Mynydd Bach, gan gymryd Trefenter i mewn ac ystyried hanes clostiroedd a gadael ffermydd wedi hynny gyda llawer yn ymfudo i Ohio. Daeth y daith i ben yn nhŷ Annmarie ar gyfer te a chacennau.

Cyfarfu taith gerdded olaf Afon Aeron yng Nghae Sgwar, Aberaeron, ar 12 Mehefin. Sefydlwyd yr harbwr gan Ddeddf Seneddol ym 1807 ac roedd yn syniad gan berchennog tir lleol cyfoethog, y Parch Alban Thomas Jones Gwynne. Yn fuan daeth yr harbwr yn ganolfan adeiladu llongau a masnach a pharhaodd y ffordd honno tan ganol yr 20fed ganrif pan ddechreuodd twristiaeth gymryd drosodd. Daeth y daith gerdded i ben gyda the yn Ambassadors.

Cynhaliwyd ein taith gerdded olaf ar gyfer y tymor hwn ar 10 Gorffennaf yn Llanrhystud. Dechreuodd y daith gerdded fer hon yn yr Ysgubor, Pencarreg, ac aeth â ni o amgylch yr Afon Wyre trwy'r Eglwys. Unwaith eto, roedd hon yn ardal adeiladu llongau yn y 18fed a'r 19eg ganrif gyda llawer o amwynderau lleol. Cynhaliodd The White Swan yn Llanon ein te olaf.

Diolch i Ali a gipiodd bob un ohonom ar gamera ar gyfer tudalen Facebook Pennant!

Bydd ein tymor nesaf yn cychwyn yn Rhos yr Hafod ar nos Fercher 14 Medi pan fydd y thema yn Esgidiau Disglair... Mae angen cadarnhau hyn felly gallwch ddisgwyl rhagor am hynny maes o law!

Mae'r cerddwyr i gyd wedi mwynhau a dysgu llawer o'r teithiau cerdded hanesyddol lleol hyn. Rydym yn edrych ymlaen at y tymor newydd - does dim tâl ac mae croeso i bawb.
